On the bulwark bordering the Singel canal stands the oldest cellular prison in the Netherlands, a tangible piece of Utrecht history and a national monument complex. Wolvenplein – a striking former prison complex – is being transformed into a special mix of living, working, and hospitality.
Together with BiermanHenket, Karres and Brands created the design for the redevelopment of this monumental complex on Wittevrouwensingel street in Utrecht. In the design, the ensemble of bulwark, wall, and original buildings is maintained as an image-defining part of the canal structure. On the side of the canal, the recognizable image of a walled area can be experienced. The original architecture, spaciousness, and framework of the main building and the front buildings will be preserved and some parts thereof will be restored. The front development is an important opportunity to connect this exceptional location with the rest of the city.
The starting point will be the connection of the outside of the complex with larger frameworks while retaining the intriguing, closed-off character of the prison complex on the inside. The green public space complements the extensive network of green urban indoor areas in the historic city centre and the network outside of it. The green Wolvenplein will be the front garden of the complex and a part of the city's green network.
The complex forms a new link in existing bicycle and pedestrian links. A new bridge on the north side will connect to Griftpark and the green structures on the other side of the Wittevrouwensingel street and beyond. The position of the bridge was chosen to create a continuous public route for pedestrians. The new footpath along the embankment connects to Zocher's park-like canal structure, which forms the link with the other former or current bulwarks. The walking route continues through the inner courtyard. This changes the stronghold from a blockade into a new part of the city, a cohesive neighbourhood of different buildings with varied uses, one that feels like a singular whole. A leafy place where people can catch their breath.
