Rooi Harten

In collaboration with DAT Architects in Tilburg, Karres and Brands has created an urban plan for Rooi Harten, the former monastery and convent gardens that once housed the Missionaries of the ‘Sacred Heart of Jesus. This new design adds buildings on the edges of the planned area, along with a series of serene gardens. The concept is inspired by inner-city residential courtyards, where peace and quiet and a green environment provide a special quality of life. The unique character of the monastery and the hidden, walled garden is enhanced by the creation of new gardens.

The area’s most valuable elements have been respectfully integrated into the plan and given rise to a variety of spatial conditions. The Mission House has retained its autonomous monumental position on Bredaseweg, and the chapel is situated in a central park-like space that incorporates the three monumental beech trees.

The wall, the monumental row of trees, the stables and the cemetery were all preserved as well. The lines of sight towards the monastery and elements helped to determine the position of the buildings. The private grounds are open to Tilburg residents during the daytime and are easily accessible from the south. This gives the garden a special meaning for the neighbourhood and the city and also creates new informal walking routes through the area.

The monastery itself has been given a new purpose with the addition of office spaces, reflection rooms and a restaurant. Apartments and single-family homes have been created on the edges of the plan area. Due to their location, these houses are different in character. In this concept plan, the historical layers of Rooi Harten can be clearly felt.
