Bahrenfeld

Hamburg, Germany

Karres en Brands joined a planning workshop in Hamburg Bahrenfeld, discussing possibilities of todays fragmented open space structure to transform into a strong future landscape axis.

Since the surrounding city fabric will be scene to major transformations in the coming decades, the green structures along the Holstenkamp will get the opportunity to develop simultaneously and take advantage of its one of a kind pre-existing configurations. This being a unique neighbourship of church and city as the main land owners and an extensive path network spanning between the old cemeteries and community gardens of the area.

Especially the conversion of some of the areas cemeteries allows for new ideas and spatial rethinking. As part of this new identity the design brings attention to the cemeteries’ extensive tree structures that formed here over time and are at risk of turning into a “green soup” of trees and shrubs. A thorough study followed by targeted subtracting and adding will enable todays tree and path structures to become a solid framework for future developments - whether in housing or open space development.
