Close to the centre of Hengelo former industrial areas are being redeveloped into a new quarter of the city, ‘Hart van Zuid’. In total it is an area of circa 680,000 m² with an urban character, mixed functions and an industrial heritage. Until 2018, diverse residential and commercial environments are to be realized there, with space for living, working, education and recreation. Hart van Zuid is one of the largest post-war urban redevelopment projects.
The historical context and the substantial urban proportions will serve to dictate the plan of the public space. Additionally, its character will be defined by creeks and vegetation. For the design, use will especially be made of ‘ordinary’ materials that are simple, tough and sturdy in detail.
Karres en Brands established the Public Space Masterplan for the whole of Hart van Zuid, and has already outlined and realized several of the areas therein. These include Lansinkveld, Langeler Erve, Industrieplein (‘Industry Square’), the Willem de Clercq Street, the Canal Zone and Stationsplein (‘Station Square’). Various projects are already completed: the Willem de Clercq Street has been rearranged and the first phase of Landsinkveld is finished, as well as Langeler Erve and the temporary layout of Industrieplein. In the framework of the Belvedere Subsidy a design plan has also been proposed for the Vereenigings Park. At the moment, the design for Stationsplein is being generated.
