Karres and Brands, together with Buro Happold, received second prize in the competition to redevelop the station area of Bregenz Mitte, located between the Austrian Alps and Lake Constance. In our vision 'Bregenz+', the station area is incorporated into a new vibrant and inclusive urban district that connects the existing city with its lakefront context. With the arrival of the railway station and accompanying infrastructural developments, the town’s relationship with Lake Constance has been lost. Our proposal restores this connection and proposes a city district that builds on the existing town fabric. Station, park and urban district are intertwined in a new park connection across the railway that enhances the new station’s potential to be incorporated into the life of the city. This new urban and transport hub would front onto both the historic city centre and onto the lakefront park, with its spectacular views over Lake Constance.
This urban planning approach in which a station area is fully embedded within the city in an inclusive, sustainable and pedestrian-friendly way was highly appreciated by the jury.
Congratulations to studio VlayStreeruwitz, Bauchplan and Con.sens mobility design on winning the competition.
