The Randwick health precinct is beginning to take shape as the highest point is reached in the construction of the new Prince of Wales Hospital Integrated Acute Services Building. The milestone is part of an unprecedented $1.5 billion investment in health at Randwick to deliver new models of care, ground-breaking health, education and research partnerships, and economic growth to directly benefit South East Sydney and the NSW community.

In the past years, in collaboration with BVN and Terroir, Karres en Brands designed a masterplan for the redevelopment and expansion of the Randwick Health Project, a prominent complex of academic hospitals and research institutes in Sydney. The masterplan responds to a changing demand in healthcare environments. Rather than a traditional, large-scale hospital for the treatment of illnesses, Randwick health precinct will shift to a holistic healthcare environment that focuses on prevention, education and self-reliance – a care environment in which humans, and the human scale, are central.

Health and knowledge precincts are public spaces and this project has the ability to develop into an important civic space within Sydney that engages with and enhances the connections. The health precinct is strategically located and has the opportunity to become a great place of knowledge, research and innovation in addition to being an attractive workplace, a vibrant quarter of learning, and a safe and tranquil space for health and well-being.
