Karres en Brands has been shortlisted with two masterplans for the WAF awards. Next to Oberbillwerder, in Hamburg, the regenerative strategy for Svobodny, in the Amur region, Russia has also been nominated. The very different contexts of these two projects reaffirm the robustness of our landscape-based approach to master planning.
Arising as a new sustainable development, our joint proposal with Adept for Oberbillwerder focuses on placemaking and connecting to the many existing landscape layers. With an integrative approach to design the plan looks into the future, from mobility to health from ecology to economy; to open a new chapter in sustainable urban development.
Svobodny, a formerly booming mining city, with worn-down and insufficient public infrastructure, expects rapid growth of the economy and an increase in population. This presents special challenges and opportunities for the city. Together with STRELKA KB, Karres en Brands developed a regenerative landscape-based approach, aiming to create a resilient and healthy city. The extensive strategy is built on the existing urban layers and the strong qualities of the surrounding landscapes. By adding new layers to the plan, strengthening hierarchy and reconnecting the city to its landscape, Svobodny becomes a green, healthy city, anti-fragile for future challenges.
