In the past few years karres+brands has been working on the design for the expansion of the existing cemetery in Loenen. The plan includes a phased development of 5,000 new graves and multiple burial areas. In the design, several ‘rooms’ are created in the existing forest connected by an informal path system. This new route connects the existing cemetery with the new burial areas. 

 The existing cemetery was originally designed by D. Haspels in 1949. The design of the new burial areas forms an autonomous extension and by this respects the exisiting qualities. The first phase of the development of the new burial areas has now started. The main path and the ‘rooms’ in the forest have been cut out in the forest and the first contours of the design have become visible. The first phase is expected to be completed in October 2015.
