De Nieuwe Ooster cemetery has been nominated for the Geurt Brinkgreve Award 2015. This prize is annually awarded by the City of Amsterdam for the best redevelopment initiative in Amsterdam.
The cemetery is located in Amsterdam and designed by landscape architect Springer in 1889. In a landscaped park he designed a symmetrical entrance area which was completed with neo-Renaissance style buildings. The central reception building was replaced with an auditorium by city architect Leupen in 1939. karres+brands together with Bierman Henket architects made a master plan for the entrance area in 2008. Bierman Henket subsequently made the design for the renovation of the auditorium and the crematorium expansion. karres+brands redesigned the entrance area.
Out of eight nominations De Nieuwe Ooster, along with De Tandwielenfabriek (The Gear Wheel Factory) and World of Food Amsterdam made it to the last round. On 10 December the winning project will be announced.
