Construction of Feanwâlden park underway

Construction has started on Feanwâlden park. Following the completion and commissioning of the bus station at the transferium in Feanwâlden, work on the final element of the design – the high-quality park with an attractive recreational function – has finally begun. Now that ground has been broken, the end of the redevelopment project is in sight; the park is expected to be completed this summer.

In 2020, the Centrale As (N356) through Feanwâlden was rerouted; heavy traffic no longer flows directly through the village. Additionally, the village is better connected to the surrounding villages of Damwoude and Daryp. The newly created space between the village and the railway track called for an ambitious plan. This proved to be a unique opportunity to give the space back to the village, as well as an opportunity to transform Feanwâlden railway station into a transferium (transfer hub) offering all the associated services. This transformation puts the village on the map as a key mobility hub in the area, both for commuter traffic and as a tourist transfer point. The new bus station was completed and opened last year, and the transformation of the waiting hall will result in a pleasant place to stay. The whole redevelopment project was inspired by the features of the mobility hub of the future and is intended to function as the village's living room. It will be a pleasant place to stay, work, enjoy a cup of coffee, or drop off your parcel.

Regardless of how visitors arrive in Feanwâlden – by bus, train, or car – the new park will be the first thing they see in the village. It will be the village's iconic symbol. The atmosphere and the character of the park will therefore reflect the identity of the village and connect with the neighbourhood. This means there will be no large-scale urban architecture and street profiles. Instead, the friendly and relaxed character of Feanwâlden will subtly be enhanced. Playful elements such as relief, water, and sightlines as well as unique objects, bridges, and landscaping form the basis of the new park design. The pond and the wadis will collect the excess rainwater and create a pleasant place to relax and spend time. Thanks to these features, the park combines functionality with contemporary elegance.

The park is designed with different users in mind; it is truly a park for the entire neighbourhood. Children at the adjacent school will be able to play on the football field and in the playground. The residents of the nearby care facility will be able to take a pleasant walk or sit in the sun. By adding stepping stones, among other things, the wadis will provide a challenging place for children to play and catch frogs. This promises to be a contemporary park that complements the relaxed character of Feanwâlden.
