Stadspark Groningen

Stadspark Groningen

Groningen, Netherlands

Three-sharing increases the attractiveness

The Stadspark, the largest and one of the oldest parks in Groningen, is ready for enhancement. The aim of the structural vision is to make the park ready for the future by reinforcing its existing qualities and introducing new usage opportunities.

The park potentially has great significance for the city, but it attracts too few visitors in relation to its size and the efforts needed for maintenance. The spatial structure and the accessibility of the park are also due for improvement. To enhance the quality of the park, structural measures need to be taken. The main element of the master plan is based on bringing about a three-fold spatial and functional division of the park: the Springer Park for rest, recreation and carefree enjoyment in a historic setting designed by landscape architect Leonard Springer, the Nature Park for a peaceful experience of nature and the Park Boulevard for cultural events.

The new design for the Stadspark will be spatially structured by means of two lanes: The Concourse Lane, which makes a connection with the adjacent neighbourhood and is therefore even more of a main artery for the park than is now the case. And the Nature Park Lane, the second primary artery that is formed by a new low-speed traffic route between the Park Boulevard and the Nature Park.
