In collaboration with Döll architecten, Karres en Brands developed a master plan for the new neighborhood on the outskirts of Mönchen-Gladbach. The new neighborhood combines collectively, freedom in lifestyle and a rural atmosphere as the main features. The ever still popularity of the German tradition of allotment gardens (Kleingarten), served as an inspiration for a spatial and conceptual organization of the new neighborhood.
The residential area is aimed to attract highly motivated people of all ages and different family structures, who consciously choose a home in a green, safe and eco-friendly environment. The individual freedom consists of the fact that individual residents can determine their own house within the urban framework. Alternating plot sizes provide a great offer on various typologies. At the same time, collective facilities are shared with neighbors.
A network of small-scale, various collective spaces and play facilities, both within the neighborhood and the adjacent park contribute to a green and relaxed neighborhood. The adjacent park is an important amenity for the new residents. It is part of the large scale landscape corridor, which consists of a mixture of different landscape typologies connecting towns around Mönchen-Gladbach. The proposal envisions the park as a rural playground where the original and new residents can find a common meeting place. Like the variety of plots in the new neighborhood, the park also consists of various fields, reflecting the surrounding agricultural landscape. The individual areas have different vegetation and are inspired by rural farmland and should be further detailed in close dialogue with the local residents, the main users of the park.
