Bregenz + is our vision for a new Bregenz that is vibrant and inclusive. True to its history, but also ambitious and forward-looking. Bregenz + gives the station area back to the city by reconnecting green and recreational corridors. The goal is to create the framework for a completely new kind of neighborhood, developed at the interface between city and nature with contextual and authentic spatial and building typologies that meet Bregenz’s current and future needs.
In the vision of Bregenz +, landscape and public space form the organizational structure of the plan. This structure is not only physically connected to its surroundings, it is in every way an extension of the existing neighborhoods. The public spaces of the new district overcome the surrounding infrastructural barriers and connect with the context of the city and the different neighborhoods between the Quellenviertel, the Festival District, the lake facilities, the city center and beyond.
Public spaces provide a flexible yet compact framework that maximizes space for existing and new habitats and ecological concerns while enhancing urban living and recreation. The so-called Lifeline is a connective pedestrian and public infrastructure that extends through all central areas of Bregenz and links the station area with the surrounding neighborhoods. The Lifeline is an extension of the existing logic of public spaces in Bregenz. It bundles public life and connects the most important public destinations along the railroad line. It is the place where all neighborhoods come together and where all urban life in Bregenz meets. A generous public platform for a livable city and a representative symbol for the future of Bregenz. The Greenline is our principal public connection across the railroad tracks. It essentially unites the lakeside park and facilities with the urban fabric across the railroad. In addition to this linking of neighborhoods, it provides access to the station and train tracks while offering spectacular views of the surrounding area.
For Bregenz to successfully implement the development of its train station area, it needs a cohesive and contextual urban fabric. Bregenz + transforms an otherwise very standard typological approach into a very contextual urban design. Each block in Bregenz + is an extension of its surroundings. The blocks are not projected onto the site, but grow out of the existing context, respecting local conditions and the urban fabric typical of Bregenz.
